Lex's Poetry

Fun fact about Mad and I: another passion we share is writing.  Mad is in love with poetry.  My forte is fiction, but during my last semester of college, I took a creative writing class that had a poetry unit.  Oddly enough, World Poetry Day was just this week on March 21.  To celebrate, we decided to share some of our work!  My roommate/best friend teased me during my class’s poetry unit because I was assigned to write 3-5 (I don’t remember, but it really wasn’t much) pieces… I wound up writing 18.  I just couldn’t stop.  So, here are some of those pieces that I’ve kept hidden on my laptop.  Until now, only my best friend has read all of them… unless I turned it in for class, obviously.  I hope they speak to you in some way, shape, or form.

“hey princess”

was a text I woke up to one morning.

I rolled my eyes.

I’m not a romantic girl.

what’s the point of Valentine’s Day

when you should be showing your partner

how much you love and care for them

every day of the year?

I’m allergic to flowers

{I’m a sucker for ice cream

and iced caramel macchiatos

please and thank you}.

pet names like

honey

sweetheart

dear

make me gag.

those aren’t my names

{call me babe when we are engaged

please and thank you}.

PDA – uh, can you not?

do you have to be touching

all the time?

{surprise me out in public

by running up behind me,

wrapping your arms around my waist,

and kissing me on the cheek

please and thank you}.

“I’m not a princess”

I shot back.

“you are to me so deal with it.”

this time, I laughed.

he had to be kidding, right?

did he know who he was talking to?

“I’m not a princess”

I repeated.

I’m a queen.

after a night of

drinking,

singing,

and dancing

I woke up thinking of

you.

  • I would’ve rather woken up hungover

the liquid pooling in my goggles

could be chlorinated water

or salty tears.

it’s reassuring to know that no one

will be able to tell the difference.
